One great knife, or more?
I could find a good reason to own just one great knife for a number of jobs, or a number of great knifes for different jobs. The new Ellis Slim EDC, from my favourite knife maker The James Brand, fits (literally) into both of those situations.
Firstly, look at its size. It really is slim.

Albiet weighing just 49g, the Ellis Slim doesn’t feel one bit less than the premium quality I have grown to appreciate from The James Brand. As you can see, I have the same Coyote Tan handle colour as my other knife, the one I made those delicious club sandwiches with.
This colour option carries a black half serrated blade, with two handed opening and non-locking functions (so good for those in the UK). Clipped into the top pocket of my shirt, the Ellis Slim slips away securely and you wouldn’t even know that a quality utility tool is even in there.
On one end of the knife is a functional flat head screwdriver and bottle opener bit. Simple but usable. Think tripod head plate, or even the battery tray for your camera.

On the river
As summers evenings go, this was a chill one. I got to the river just before sunset, the moment when he harsh light drops off and things start to settle down. The mountain water is cold, but after the hot day I’m ready to get my feet wet.
A few bugs are hatching so I tie on a small dry fly. One of the things I have been really enjoying about fly fishing lately is keying into what creatures live on my local rivers, and try to match them with something from my box that looks similar in both size and colour.
No luck netting a fish. I’m back in the van with a cold beer and a little time available to tie flies to add into my box. The light has gone but the sound of the cicadas echo across the stream here in Spain. These moments appreciating nature are grounding.

Final thoughts
Head over to The James Brand website to find out more about their truly beautiful range of knifes and accessories. I don’t personally endorse things that I am not truly a fan of, so I hope that you might find a new piece of gear for your adventures that you will come to love too.
